Agriculture in Saudi Arabia: A Growing Sector with Strategic Importance
Saudi Arabia’s agricultural sector has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past few decades. Once heavily reliant on food imports, the Kingdom has made significant strides toward achieving food security and agricultural sustainability through government support, innovation, and strategic investments.
Today, agriculture contributes approximately 2.3% to the Kingdom’s GDP and spans over 772,000 hectares, producing more than 10.8 million tons of fruits, vegetables, grains, and fodder annually. The sector employs around 450,000 people, making it a key component of rural development and economic diversification under Vision 2030.
Saudi Arabia is also a global leader in date production, ranking second worldwide with an annual output of around 1.5 million tons from over 152,000 hectares of date palms—particularly in regions such as Al-Qassim, Al-Jawf, and Buraydah.
