Agriculture in Oman: Key Crops and Production
Oman's agricultural landscape, characterized by its arid climate and limited arable land (approximately 173,000 hectares), relies heavily on modern irrigation systems and greenhouse technology.
Dates represent Oman's most significant agricultural product, with over 8 million date palms producing approximately 360,000 tons annually. The main date-growing regions include Al Batinah, Al Dhahirah, and Al Sharqiyah governorates.
Fruits and vegetables constitute a significant portion of Oman's agricultural output:
- Bananas are a major fruit crop, particularly in the Al Batinah region
- Lime (Omani lemon) is an important export crop
- Tomatoes, cucumbers, and melons are primary greenhouse crops
- Coconut cultivation is significant in Dhofar region
Forage crops, particularly Rhodes grass and alfalfa, support the country's livestock sector. Limited cereal production includes wheat and barley, though these are mainly for local consumption.
Key crops:
- Dates
- Bananas
- Limes
- Coconuts
- Greenhouse vegetables (tomatoes, cucumbers, melons)
- Forage crops
