Agriculture in Iraq: Key Crops and Production

Iraq's diverse agricultural landscape, supported by the Tigris and Euphrates river systems, produces a wide variety of strategic crops across approximately 9.3 million hectares of arable land.

Wheat cultivation dominates Iraq's agricultural sector, with annual production reaching around 4.5 million tons, though production varies yearly based on rainfall and water availability. The primary wheat-growing regions include Nineveh, Kirkuk, and Wasit governorates.

Iraq is globally recognized for its date palm industry, hosting over 16 million date palms that produce approximately 650,000 tons annually. The country boasts more than 600 date varieties, with Basra, Babil, and Karbala being the main production areas.

Rice cultivation is concentrated in the central and southern regions, particularly in Najaf and Diwaniyah, with annual production averaging 250,000 tons. Barley serves as another significant cereal crop, with production reaching about 900,000 tons annually.

Tomatoes, cucumbers, and eggplants lead Iraq's vegetable production, with significant greenhouse cultivation in central and southern regions. Fruit production includes pomegranates, citrus, and grapes, particularly in the northern regions.

The key crops are wheat, dates, rice, barley, and vegetables.
